Mary Alice Reporting – The Tuscarawas County Republican Party held their annual Lincoln Day event Tuesday evening and hosted special guest speaker Chief Justice Sharron Kennedy.

Before the keynote speaker took the mic, party chairman Doug Wills presented the 2023 Military Honoree, which went to Charles Clifford Finton.

Finton served in the United States Navy.

“Cliff was drafted in 1965 in the Navy. Cliff did not have to go because he was an only child. In 1965, he got put on a big battle ship in an aircraft carrier and he served there for two years.”

With it being Lincoln Day, Chief Justice Kennedy spoke about the legacy that the former United States President left behind.

“He was born in a one-room log cabin February 12th of 1809. He moved from Kentucky to Indiana as the age of eight. He was self-taught and he became a self-educated man. At age twenty-four, he was elected to the Illinois legislature and began the study of law.”

At the events end, Wills commented on the Tuscarawas Republican Party now having a new headquarters on SR 39, in New Philadelphia.
