Clayton Eugene Smart, Jr., 55, of New Philadelphia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, June 30, 2023, of an apparent heart attack. Born April 11, 1968, in Coshocton, he was a son of Linda Mae (Butler) Smart-Ondash of New Philadelphia and the late Clayton Eugene Smart, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his stepfathers, Carl Ondash and James Albaugh.
Clayton spent his youth in the Port Washington and Bowerston areas and was a 1986 graduate of Conotton Valley High School. He had a long career in landscaping, both locally and in the Alliance area where he had resided for over twenty years before moving to New Philadelphia. He truly loved being outdoors, both at work and enjoying his favorite hobbies – fishin’ and drinkin’. He loved country music and, most of all, spending time with his family and friends.
He will be deeply missed by his children, Ashley Garvin, Erica (companion, Alvin Bell) Smart, and Clayton J. Smart; grandchildren, Natashauna Martin, Sofya Smart, and Aariyah Smart; siblings, David Smart, Diane (Ray) Moore, Chad (Maggie) Ondash, and Danielle (Michael) Millican; many nieces and nephews, including Katie Stickler with whom he was very close; and dear friends, Donnie, Brenda, Flossie, Bill, and C.J.
Cremation is planned, and Clayton’s family will hold a celebration of his life on July 29, 2023, from noon until 3:00 p.m. at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his family in care of the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home, Inc., 26 Grant St., Dennison, OH 44621-1269 to help defray the cost of his final expenses.
