Mary Alice Reporting –

The Ohio Department of Insurance is warning about fraudulent Medicare claims.

Ohioans on Medicare are urged to watch for fraudulent claims made with their Medicare numbers for medical supplies, most notably urinary catheters, back and knee braces, and glucose monitors.

The scammers are using individuals’ Medicare numbers and falsely billing the provider, oftentimes thousands of dollars per claim. Affected individuals are not impacted financially but face a confusing and stressful situation, including obtaining a new number and card from Medicare and possible complications in receiving legitimate medical supplies in the future.

The Department of Insurance notes some red flags include not recognizing the ordering physicians name, the ordering doctor is in another state, a person receives and Explanation of Benefits document or Medicare Summary Notice document with a large quantity of supplies, or the Medicare recipient does not have a medical condition that would require supplies.

Anyone effected by this scam can contact the Ohio Senior Medicare Patrol at 800-293-4767 or go to proseniors.org to report the scam.
