For three days the hometown of Major League Baseball’s winningest pitcher honors the late 19th and early 20th century ball player.
Festival committee vice president Corey Rehard says Friday night, Saturday and Sunday are packed with activities, highlighted by the traditional visit from a baseball legend. This year it’s former longtime Major Leaguer Greg Swindell, who spent seven of his 17 seasons pitching for the Cleveland Indians. Newcomerstown High School will host a lunch and Q and A session with Swindell on Saturday.
The parade (featuring Swindell) starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday. However, everything opens Friday at 5 with food, entertainment and games, including a cornhole tournament. Saturday has the Greg Swindell events plus the Hero Hustle 5K costume run and walk at 9. Sunday includes vintage baseball, a car show, talent show and pet show, plus a spiritual event to start off Saturday morning.
Register for activities through the Cy Young Days Festival website. Cy Young won 511 games in his career. Nobody else is close. The closest active player is 42-year-old Justin Verlander with 262 wins. MLB named the award for the best pitcher in baseball after Cy Young in 1956, the year after he died
