Nick McWilliams reporting – The Dennison Fire Department will invite community members to help with a school supplies donation drive on August 19th.
Fire Chief Dave McConnell told Dennison council Wednesday night they are holding the event as a hybrid touch-a-truck and school supply drive.
He says that they are planning on utilizing the P.H.A.C. Park on the west side of the village.
“This year we wanted to step it up a little bit. They’ve invited all these people … now granted not all these people are going to show up, but they’ve invited them to bring a truck or something and let kids see different combinations of trucks and stuff.”
McConnell adds that the first hour will be reserved for a sensory friendly experience. All supplies collected will be distributed to schools around the Dennison area.
In other fire department news, McConnell says that maintenance will be needed at some point related to a water pump on a fire truck.
“The pumps, they’re made out of cast steel. The very bottom of our newest fire truck, when they cast that steel, there must have been a little bubble in it, and over time, without showing on the pump itself, it blew a hole through it. It’s got a tiny, little pinhole.”
The chief says that the concern lies with taking the pump off to weld it for repairs, and discovering a hairline crack or other type of fracture, but there is no concern about its reliability at this time.
The Dennison finance committee will now discuss the next step.
