Dessie Burgess, 92, of Dover, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born on August 4, 1933, in Toll Gate, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Johnie and Mary Stull Cross. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sherrell Burgess, on July 30, 1999; her daughter, Debbie Stephens; her grandson, Cory Herron; and three brothers and five sisters.

Dessie retired in 2010 from Family Dollar after many years of service in area retail stores. A longtime member of the Church of Christ in Dover, she was known for her remarkable talents as a seamstress and quilter. She lovingly created beautiful blankets and quilts for family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, and most of all, spending time with her family, especially babysitting and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, James (Cindy) Burgess of Dover; her sisters, Tressie Monigold of Florida, Jean Anderson, and Liz Grimes; her grandchildren, Chris (Kate) Martin, Ashley (JR) Phillipson, Kevin (Kelsey) Martin, Derek (Christina) Burgess, Josh Burgess, Tara Burgess, Jeremy (Marsha) Herron, Travis (Kim) Herron; 23 great-grandchildren; and her favorite dog, Alessio.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory in Dover, with Joe Snyder officiating. Interment will follow at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.
