A new text scam is circulating supposedly from the Ohio Department of Motor Vehicles.

Registrar Charlie Norman says the notice claims there is an outstanding traffic ticket, and payment is needed to avoid penalties.

“This is a phishing attempt to get Ohioans personal and financial information. The important thing we want to let people to know is do not click that link and delete the text as soon as you get it.”

The DMV does send out some text messages, but individuals have to sign up for them.

Norman urges all to stay vigilant and to ensure the elderly is aware of this type of fraud.

“We appreciate people sharing this information particularly with someone of our population that falls prey to these things. Often it’s our elderly population so make sure your neighbors, family, friends, mom, and dad know about this as well.”

Norman adds red flags to look for is a threatening tone, an abnormal sense of urgency, and a list of supposed repercussions.
