Donald Eugene McCreery, a beloved member of the Dover community, passed away suddenly at home on October 20, 2024, at the age of 92.

Born on August 14, 1932, in Dover, Ohio, he was the son of the late Ernest and Emma (Tchantz) McCreery. Don led a life characterized by hard work, dedication, and a passion for helping others.

After graduating from Dover High School in 1951, Don honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War, proudly contributing to the safety and liberty of his country. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career, retiring in 1994 from the former Empire Detroit in Dover, where he worked diligently as the maintenance supervisor for many years.

On March 5, 1955, he married Gail (Gordon) McCreery, who survives. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this coming March. He also leaves behind his daughters; Jennifer (Greg) Barrows of South Carolina, and Jill Denbow of Dover; grandchildren, Corey (Jamie) Barrows, Meagan Lindberg, and Kendall Barrows (fiance, Wills Burns); great-grandchildren, Braxton and Addison Lawver; and his sister, Joanne TelKamp of Florida; along with many nieces and nephews.

Don was known for his unwavering work ethic, which continued well into his later years. Even at the age of 92, he took joy in mowing his yard and immersed himself in woodworking projects within his workshop. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to building ramps for the disabled, showcasing his generous spirit and commitment to improving the lives of others around him. There was never a shortage of projects for Don; he always had something in the works and a new challenge to tackle.

A man of varied interests, Don loved dancing and cherished the time spent with his close friends, affectionately known as “The Flakes.” His connections with friends and family were of utmost importance to him, often spending weekends and holidays in joyous company. He will be missed by his great friend and longtime helper Ben Reynolds. Don also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family on their boat at Atwood Lake.

Among his proudest accomplishments, Don and his wife, Gail, built their own home in the early 1960s, aided by the love and support of family and friends. His involvement with the First Christian Church in Dover was also significant; he attended for many years and contributed in various capacities, including maintenance and he built the communion table and handrail at the church.
