Dorothy Showalter, 95, died peacefully on May 8 at the Truman House surrounded by her daughters. She was born in Flushing, Ohio to the late William Merritt and Emma Merritt Romich.

Dorothy enjoyed time entertaining family and friends as well as spending winters in Florida. In her later years, she enjoyed watching the Cleveland Guardians and Buckeyes and taking rides in the country. She was always willing to listen and had a smile on her face.

She graduated from Flushing High School, attended Muskingum College and Ohio State University, and retired from Buckeye Career Center. Dorothy was a past Matron of the Ohio Eastern Star and Carrollton Women’s Club and is a current member of the First United Methodist Church of Dover.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, with whom she celebrated 67 years; stepfather, Raymond Romich; brother, James Merritt; sister, Eleanor McBurney; and two sons-in-law, Dan Monaco, and Bill Hoffmeyer.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Sandy Showalter of Dover and Sue Hoffmeyer of Massillon; step-granddaughter, Rhonda Hoffmeyer (Tanya Wright), of New Philadelphia and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Monday, May 16, 2022, at 11 am with visitation one hour preceding the service. Pastor Dave St. Aubin and Reverend Jim Long will officiate. Interment will take place at Dover Burial Park followed by a luncheon at the Monarch Center.
