Dover firefighters participated in some valuable training at a vacant home behind Shenanigans Restaurant Wednesday.

Captain Joe Minocchi says they were given permission to use the soon- to-be-torn-down, 2-bedroom home at 39 South Johnson Avenue for live fire training.

“We have straw pallets we burn. We make a set in a corner of a room. We have an ignition team, they ignite it, they come out, we send a crew, and the crew attacks that fire and extinguishes that fire.”

The department had over 10,000 gallons of water on site for the training.

“We have a fire going down in the basement. You’ve got smoke pushing out of the basement, smoke out the front, the roof. This looks like an actual fire. This mimics an actual fire as best it can. This is great training for us.”

Dover firefighters also participated in swift water rescue training last week.
