Nick McWilliams reporting – Both Dover and New Philadelphia residents will be eligible soon for a federally backed program to improve safety within their homes.
The United States Department of Agriculture Rural Housing Program aims to improve housing in lower population areas with loans, grants, and other financial assistance.
Dover Mayor Shane Gunnoe says that, the approval for the program marks the first time both Dover and New Phila have received the federal approval in 48 years.
“The program allows up to $10,000 in safety grants, safety improvements for income eligible individuals for home improvements, as well as low interest loans for purchasing a repair of their homes.”
Potentially more attractive to the city itself, the program also opens the door for more federal resources for housing developments in communities.
Dover has been discussing ways to invigorate the housing market and availability of homes in the city.
A public hearing in Dover for interested residents will be November 2nd at 10 a.m. at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center.
