Nick McWilliams reporting – With students at home for spring break, Dover safety officials utilized the unused school space for emergency training.

A known practice for police forces in some parts of the state and country, Dover Police Department officers practiced various techniques for large buildings such as the high school.

Mayor Shane Gunnoe said that officers used the space on April 4th, and they’ll be better prepared in case of an emergency with the fresh training.

“As a result of this training, our police department was able to practice techniques that would be necessary in the event of an urgent response. And thank you to the Dover high School for allowing us the use of the facility while students and teachers were on spring break.”

In other police related updates, the school resource officer’s vehicle was totaled in March, due to a falling tree. A temporary vehicle will be utilized in the meantime until a new cruiser comes in.

That vehicle is a part of three total new cruisers that have been ordered, and are currently being prepared to be put into service at a cost of just over $135,000.
