Mary Alice Reporting –

The second week of April recognizes those who serve the public by answering phone calls and assisting other first responders.

It’s National Public Telecommunicators Week, which was founded in 1981 following a disagreement between dispatchers and administration at a Sheriff’s Office in California.

Dover Mayor Shane Gunnoe, at Monday’s council meeting, took a moment to celebrate and thank those who work to serve the public.

“Our dispatchers are our first line of our public service and provide critical services to the community every day. We say ‘thank you’ to each of our dispatchers.”

The recognition week was officially declared in 1991 by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton.
