The Dover School Board this week moved some money from its operating budget to its permanent improvement budget to fund building upgrades.

Superintendent Karie McCrate says the district needs to address its aging K-through-8 buildings, including the nearly 115-year-old Dover Avenue Elementary School.

The move of 1.5 to 1.8 million dollars per year required the Board to reallocate 4.4 inside mills. That’s millage that was not voted on. McCrate says property taxes will go up, but she says too many factors are in play to provide an exact dollar amount.

McCrate says the move positions the district to receive 50 million dollars in state funding to cover 60 percent of construction costs that could include a new building or buildings. However, she says it is too early to be more specific.

The district is looking for residents to join a community advisory team to provide input on facilities planning.
