Students had their opportunity to sharpen and show off skills and knowledge behind the wheel by competing in a series of maneuverability challenges and written tests.

Teams from eight area high schools took part in the Tuscarawas County Health Department’s 28th annual Teen Driving Roadeo at the County Fairgrounds Wednesday.

Director of Community Relations Jennifer Demuth says it’s about encouraging participants to become better drivers and think about their actions.

“To emphasize the importance of safe driving, making sure our teens remember to wear their seat belts, they’re not texting and driving, and to not drive distracted. Also to drive sober at all times and just really following the rules of the road.”

The event is funded in part through a grant from the Tuscarawas County Community Foundation.

Demuth says it takes a group effort to put this on each year.

There are also incentives for the students to do their best in the different categories.

The team from Dover won, followed by Buckeye Career Center in second place, and New Philadelphia rounding out the top three.
