Dr. Lewis P. Burrell, Educator, Home Builder, and international traveler, age 86, of Dover passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 27, 2022, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on October 1, 1936, in Dundee and was the son of the late Donald and Helen Weber Burrell. Lewis was also preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Margene Burrell on May 13, 2004.

Lewis was a 1954 graduate of Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School, received his Bachelor’s degree from Anderson College, Masters’s degree from the Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. He was a Professor at Kent State University, having retired in 1995 after many years of service. Lewis was a member of the Barrs Mill Church of God in Sugarcreek, a member and past president of the Christian Businessman’s Organization in Tuscarawas County, and was president of the Newark Teachers Association. He also served as the Education Ambassador to China where he would share the word of the Lord and hand out Bibles to the people of China. In addition to being a college professor, Lewis also owned his own construction company and built over 170 homes throughout the area.

He is survived by his daughters, LaJoya Boffo of West Lafayette, Jeannette (Brian) Baltzly of Florida, Christine (Roger) Pershing of Dover; sons, David (Lisa) Burrell of Dover, Mark (Della) Burrell of New Philadelphia, Gary (Laura) Burrell of Warsaw; sister, Joan (John) Ratzlaff of Indiana; brothers, Sam (Pauletta) Burrell, Joel (Diane) Burrell both of Indiana, Jeff (Karen) Burrell of Cincinnati, Steve (Maria) Burrell of Vandalia, Ohio; 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 1st starting at 1:30 pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Josh Wilson officiating. The interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
