Nick McWilliams reporting – With remembrance the purpose of the upcoming holiday weekend, drivers are asked to keep the purpose of Memorial Day in mind and make smart decisions.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will up their presence of state highways to promote traffic safety, and troopers are reminding all drivers to buckle up and observe all traffic laws.

Recently, the Ohio Traffic Safety Office released educational videos for teen drivers related to the dangers of irresponsible driving, with a message that relates to all motorists for the holiday weekend.

“Drunk or drugged driving is the cause of thousands of crashes each year. That’s because impaired driving affects a person’s judgement, coordination, reaction time, depth perception, emotions … basically everything that makes them a good driver in the first place.”

Last year, 15 crashes lead to 18 fatalities during the Memorial Day weekend, with seven of the deaths attributed to impaired driving.

Additionally, none of the motorists or passengers killed were wearing safety belts.

Nearly 500 impaired driving arrests were made last year during the weekend as well.

Always designate a sober driver, buckle up, obey the speed limit, and follow Ohio’s Move Over law on all roadways.
