The Ohio EPA says its response to numerous reports of dead fish in the Sugar Creek on September 9th was due to a release at Dover Chemical.
The EPA says a phenol-based material that spilled on September 6th was managed within the plant’s containment system. However, a
bad pipefitting on a drain allowed a portion to leak into the treated wastewater that the plant is permitted to discharge into the creek. The EPA says the discharge lasted less than 10 minutes and appeared limited to an area near the discharge pool with no lingering effects observed at the time of the investigation.
The EPA’s Division of Surface Water is working with the company on its response actions and evaluation of the wastewater discharge issue.
