A two-vehicle accident claimed the life of an 18-year-old Friday morning.

That incident was reported yesterday morning at around 6:08 to the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a traffic accident at the intersection of State Route 16 and County Road 6 in Jackson Township.

It was determined that 44-year-old Stephen Imel of Coshocton was traveling westbound on SR 16 when a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Wesley Shontz Jr. of Coshocton failed to yield to the right of way.

The vehicle of Imel struck Shontz Jr’s vehicle on the driver’s side.

The 18-year-old and a juvenile passenger had to be removed from the vehicle by mechanical means.

Shontz was transported to Coshocton Regional Medical Center and was pronounced deceased as a result of their injuries.

The juvenile passenger meanwhile was transported to Genesis Hospital and then on to Nationwide Children’s in Columbus where he remains in critical condition.

Imel was not injured in the incident, and that crash remains under investigation.

Jackson Township Fire, the Coshocton City Fire Department, Coshocton County EMS, and ODOT assisted on scene.
