The State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal plane crash near Midvale that killed the pilot who was flying solo.

Ohio State Highway Patrol New Philadelphia Post Commander Lt. Johnnie Maier has released some details following the fatal plane crash.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that a 1973 Cessna had taken off from Harry Clever Field but crashed in a Mill Township farm field Tuesday at 5:08pm.”

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will conduct their own investigations.

Maier adds that it was challenging to get to the crash site, which was across the river behind Five Waters Golf Course.

“Initially a challenge to locate the aircraft. Those fire responders making it to the scene were able to identify where the aircraft was at but due to the river being there and the wood line surrounding the field they had to find a different route to make it out to the scene where the aircraft had come to rest.”

Assisting at the scene was the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, the Dennison, New Philadelphia and Warwick Township Fire Departments, and the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office.
