Officials say filing taxes sooner could be beneficial and protect against refund fraud.
The deadline is April 15th, and being prepared with the necessary documents is advised.
Additionally, Jackson Hewitt’s Chief Tax Information Officer Mark Steber encourages early filing to get a return sooner and protect against identity theft.
“In this day and age of tax refund fraud and ID theft and information, personal and otherwise, bought and sold on the dark web. If you file your taxes early you lock up your data with IRS and the state, if you have it, and then some schemer who stole your information off the web or bought it from somebody, can’t swoop in file a fake tax return and steal your refund.”
Steber says 2024 saw some tax law changes, including a major one.
“1099-K threshold regarding payment from third-party payment platforms like PayPal or Apple Pay, or Venmo. If you’ve gotten paid on those platforms during the year there’s a big change. If you got more than $5,000 in activity in 2024, you’ll probably get a 1099-K this year.”
Individuals who may owe can file early to lock in their data and the amount is due April 15th.
