A Dover fabrics shop is now out of business after a fire caused significant damage early Thursday morning.
Firefighters were called to Anything Sews Fine Fabrics at 209 East Ohio Avenue at 2:37 a.m., after alarms sounded in the attached living quarters and the occupant reported smoke but no visible flames.
Captain Brooks Ross says the fire appears to have smoldered inside the business before running out of oxygen and burning itself out.
Ross says heat and smoke damaged the entire store, which sells fabric and quilting supplies. The heat was strong enough to melt light fixtures, and crews had to pull out inventory to reach smoldering materials. The one‑story building includes an attached residence, which sustained only minor smoke damage. The structure itself did not burn down.
The store’s owners, Chris and Michael Brauning, later announced on Facebook that the business is closing.
The cause of the fire and the total damage estimate remain under investigation.
