The first Tuscarawas County High School Volleyball Preview exceeded expectations Saturday at Crater Stadium in Dover.

There were five scrimmage matches played on a portable, rubber floor that was assembled in the middle of the football field. The crowd was sizable and the atmosphere unique as the teams competed under a setting sun then the Crater stadium lights.

The Dover Tornado Club, supporters of athletics at Dover schools, teamed with the Tuscarawas County Sports Hall of Fame and other sponsors to organize the event. Dover Volleyball Coach Beth Mathews was quick to say “yes.”

She hopes the popularity of this outdoor event gets more people in the gyms for volleyball games.

Saturday’s games didn’t count toward the team records. The actual season gets under way for most teams this Saturday, including New Philadelphia and Tusky Valley, who play each other at Tusky Valley High School at 10 a.m.
