A band assistant at New Philadelphia High School will not be allowed back at the school district following an indictment on two felony charges that involve a former student.
The Tuscarawas County Grand Jury on March 28th indicted 27-year-old Brandon C. Furbay on two fifth-degree felony counts: “illegal use of a minor or impaired person in nudity-oriented material or performance,” and “disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.” The alleged offenses occurred between 2017 and 2021, when the victim was between the ages of 14 and 17 and Furbay was between the ages of 19 and 23.
New Philadelphia Superintendent Amy Wentworth says Furbay was a band assistant during that time and the victim was a New Philadelphia student. She says as soon as the school officials heard about the allegations in December, they began an investigation and cut ties with Furbay.
The School Board in July approved a supplemental contract for Furbay as a band assistant for the current school year for just over 6-thousand dollars. Wentworth says he has not worked for the district since the fall of 2024.
Furbay has an arraignment hearing scheduled for April 22nd in Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court before Judge Michael Ernest.
