Quick response time by the Sherrodsville Fire Department likely saved the former school in Roswell.

Fire units were called to the school, now used as a single-family residence, around 7:30 pm on Monday.

Sherrodsville Station 20 Chief Buddy Miller says the appliance fire quickly upgraded to a structure fire.

“Flames were at the window. We knocked it out. We called for mutual aid from New Philadelphia, Fairfield, Uhrichsville, and Dover. We all work good together extinguishing it. It was an old building and it could’ve turned a lot worse”

With the combined work of the five departments, the fire was extinguished within about 45 minutes. Miller states the blaze was contained to two rooms in the 11-thousand square-foot home.

“Pretty much stayed in the kitchen and went to the room right up above it. The rest was just filled with smoke, so we knocked the windows out to vent all the smoke out of it”

The mother and daughter who were home at the time were able to escape with no injuries. The home was covered by insurance.
