Local schools were invited to the Tuscarawas County Courthouse for “Law Day.”

On November 2nd, Conotton Valley and Tuscarawas Central Catholic sat in Judge Elizabeth Thomakos’ courtroom. The schools had the opportunity to watch a sentencing and a status hearing.

Conotton Valley Social Studies Teacher Jenni Wilson says it is a delight to take her government class to Law Day every year.

“It is extremely important for students to be able to see how our judicial system works. We were very fortunate to be able to have that experience to learn about the judicial system firsthand, in seeing what happens, when there is a court case, and learning how the accused has rights.”

On November 7th, Indian Valley and Tuscarawas Valley attended Judge Michael Ernest’s courtroom for a sentencing and change of plea.

Tusky Valley Social Studies Teacher Jordan Widder says taking his government class allowed for them to see what they are learning about in class.

“We study the judicial branch on a variety of different levels. Specifically, when we begin studying the State of Ohio government, it’s nice to be able to see live, in-person, our judicial system at work.”

After each hearing, the judges explained what happened to the students and ANSWERED QUESTIONS. The students were able to ask questions and learned about the inner workings of the justice system.
