Nick McWilliams reporting – Visitors and residents in Dover will have internet access throughout public spaces with a rollout of public Wi-Fi.

Mayor Shane Gunnoe discussed the rollout of the public internet services, pinpointing city parks and the downtown area as the primary areas of focus.

He says that two phases will complete the installation, and that the new service will also bring some needed security upgrades.

“Phase One will involve the implementation of free public Wi-Fi in our public park system, including the area around the ball fields, the pool, and the top of Deis Hill. This phase will also include the addition of security cameras to our park for improved public safety. The system includes a feature that allows for future, optional, cashless transactions at our concession stands and pool for resident’s convenience.”

That initial phase is expected to be completed by the fall of 2023.

The second stage of the rollout will start next spring, focusing on the downtown area, encompassing West Second to West Fourth Street, and from Tuscarawas to Wooster Avenue.

Omni Fiber, which recently began infrastructure and installation work of fiber internet in Dover last year, is providing the “backbone” of the service at no charge to the city.
