Gloretta M. Jones, 91, of Strasburg passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Hennis Care Center of Bolivar.

Born on September 19, 1931, in Wallace, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William and Miriam (Harbert) Holt.

She graduated and was Salutatorian of Jackson High school in 1949. She later graduated from the Aultman School of Nursing and received her RN in 1955.

Gloretta married Gale Matheny in 1955 and had a son, Timothy Bryan Matheny. The three of them were involved in a tragic car accident on January 9, 1960 and Gale was killed. Gloretta and Tim were also injured and took many months to recover.

She later married Richard E. “Dick” Jones on May 13, 1961. Dick preceded her in death on October 2, 2017. Together they had two children, Scott and Lisa.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Marlene (Floyd “Junior”) Blaine, and Shirley Dunbar, and her two brothers, William (Eva) Holt, Gary (Faye) Holt.

Gloretta was an RN and worked as a nurse all of her life until she retired from Union Hospital in 1995. Nursing was her calling in life and gave her much joy in taking care of her many patients over the years.

In her early years, she was a member of the Greentown Church of God and later became a member of the First Moravian Church of Dover where she was active in the Women’s Fellowship and the choir. She enjoyed traveling and adored her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews.

She leaves behind her two sons; Tim Matheny of Strasburg, and Scott (Karol) Jones of New Philadelphia; her daughter, Lisa (Phil) Glasgow of Navarre; five grandchildren, Eric, Meghan, Mariah, Mackenzie, and Nathan; two step-grandchildren, Marissa and Erik; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Elliott, Elizabeth, Joshua, Jude, and James; along with many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory of Dover on Friday, December 30, 2022, at 4pm with Rev. John Wallace officiating. Friends can call the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday. A meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center following the service.
