Nick McWilliams reporting – Long-time New Philadelphia Police Chief Michael Goodwin has received formal recognition by the city.

Stepping away from the police department in July after serving a decade as chief, and in some capacity with the organization since 1990, Goodwin received praise from city leaders at a recent meeting.

Among those giving praise was Safety Director Greg Popham, who worked extensively with Goodwin up to his retirement.

“It’s one thing in today’s world to be an officer. It’s a whole different thing to be in charge of the officers. There’s never a dull moment, and I’m sure Mike can attest to that. There was almost always something, and almost always something different.”

Through the years, police work changed while Goodwin was employed, including the introduction of more new technology, better DNA testing methods, and the ever-present drug crisis.

Mayor Joel Day offered his own comments, giving a gift to the only police chief who has served under him since taking over as mayor in 2016.

“You were a mentor of sorts for me. When I first came to office, I didn’t know a lot of the ins and outs of the police department. You taught me that, and I greatly appreciate that. You served the city well. We just, thank you.”

After jokingly asking Goodwin if he had left all of his keys when leaving his office, Day presented him with a key to the city, commemorating his 33 years of service.

Upon leaving the office, Goodwin says the department is in good hands under new Chief Tessa Pohovey.
