Ohio’s 6th congressional district will see three elections in 2024, one of them a special ballot to select a new United States Congressman.

Bill Johnson announced his resignation effective January 21st as he moves to a position with Youngstown State University. He has been in office since 2011.

Tuscarawas County Board of Elections Director Gail Garbrandt says Ohio’s Governor announced the extra date with the Special Election Congressional Primary occurring on March 19th, the date of the Presidential Primary. A Special Congressional General Election, to fill the vacancy, will be held June 11th, followed by the regular November General Election.

In the meantime, January 19th is the deadline for partisan candidates to file a declaration of candidacy to the Mahoning County Board of Elections by 4pm.

And then Mahoning County has to certify the names of the candidates that will appear on the March 19th ballot, for the special primary, by the 24th of January.”

The 6th District covers the east portion of Ohio, from Youngstown down to Marietta, which includes counties of Carroll, Harrison, and the eastern half of Tuscarawas.

More detailed directives are expected to come from the state level.

Garbrandt adds that the voter registration deadline, for the primary, is February 20th.
