The Tusky Valley school community is celebrating its new school-based health center with the governor and others who made it possible.

The nearly 2.3-million-dollar project, located in the old high school on the district campus, was funded through the governor’s Appalachian grant program at no cost to the schools. It’s for students and residents in a district that’s been medically underserved.

Governor Mike DeWine spoke at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the health center Thursday and then toured the facility and was impressed.

Superintendent Derek Varansky says construction started in January and it actually opened in August. He says it’s already helping reduce staff and student absences.

State senator Al Landis and state rep Jodi Salvo also presented Varansky with proclamations to commemorate the occasion.

The old high school – now repurposed as a community center – continues to transform as it also houses district offices, the Tusky Valley senior center, space for local philanthropic groups, yoga classes, counseling services, and more.
