Gwen Rummell Reporting –

The Harrison County Board of Commissioners accepted a bid for nine battery-powered, portable stair wheelchairs for the EMS department.

The board received a bid from the medical technology company, Stryker, for about $135,000.

Hopedale Fire Department Chief Mark Marchetta said the new wheelchairs will make it easier and safer for transportation.

“Just imagine a four or five hundred pound person being in a basement and you need to get them up the stairs and be able to get them out to the ambulance. The stair chair, being powered, is safer for the patient and it’s better for the EMS provider because they’re not doing the lifting now.”

The commissioners unanimously voted to award the bid.

The wheelchairs, which come with rechargeable batteries, have been ordered.
