Harry “Jay” Devaul, 82, of Dennison, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at the Community Hospice Truman House in New Philadelphia. He was born December 16, 1940 on the family farm near Dennison where he lived his whole life, a son of the late Arthur J. and Ethel Irene (Patterson) Devaul.

Jay was a 1958 graduate of Dennison High School. He worked on the family farm before becoming a truckdriver for Puskarich Industries for many years, where he earned his handle “Jaybird”. Jay began driving for himself and continued until eventually retiring from trucking. Jay was an avid sports fan, always watching The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, and the Indians. He loved playing with his great-grandkids and being around everyone – family and friends. Jay loved being outside and was still a farmer at heart. He could usually be found tinkering in his garage or taking rides on the ol’ John Deere.

He will be greatly missed by his brother, Gary Devaul; daughters, Tammy (Randy) Butler, Jae Lynn (Basil) Hillyer, and Annette (Jim Pavick) Mathias; grandchildren, Ryan (Amber) Hayes, Lacey (Jeremy) Moore, Kelcey (Paul) Mason, and Vanessa (Garrett) Schwedt; 11 great-grandchildren with twins on the way; and a number of nieces and nephews, along with a special friend, Diane. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Crystal; his sister, Mary Helen Baker; and his maternal grandparents who helped raise him, Harry “Pop” and Etta Patterson.

In respecting Jay’s wishes, there are no services or calling hours. His family plan to celebrate his life privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice and Claymont FFA.
