Mary Alice Reporting – Heat and humidity are expected to be around over the next few days and health departments are urging precautions.

The heat index value is expected to rise through Friday according to the National Weather Service, and currently, Tuscarawas and surrounding counties are not on a heat advisory list but that could change.

The Tuscarawas County and Ohio Health Departments are sending a few tips to remind individuals to be safe to avoid heat related illness.

Ohio Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff says ways to beat the heat include limiting outside activities, drinking plenty of fluids, and wear loose, lightweight clothing.

“The symptoms of heat exhaustion can include dizziness, headache, nausea, a fast weak pulse, and cold clammy skin. If you experience such symptoms, move to a cool place, loosen your clothes, sip water, and apply cold cloths.”

Tips also go toward pets and other outdoor animals in the way of providing shade and clean, cool water.

The Tuscarawas Department is offering a choice of a cooling towel or misting fan, while supplies last, at their East Iron Avenue office. They are open Wednesday until 6pm, Thursday between 8am and 6pm and on Friday from 8am and 4pm.

Meanwhile, no official cooling centers have been announced through the Tuscarawas Emergency Management Agency, but anyone needing to beat the heat can also go to a public location, such as the library or grocery store.
