Mary Alice Reporting –

Heating implements will be on full time as winter weather settle and safety should be top of mind.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is providing some tips when it comes to supplemental heat sources in the home.

This primarily includes space heaters, whether electric or alternative fuel source, says Shawn Witt, a Fire and Safety Educator.

“Just want to make sure anytime we’re using space heaters or alternate methods of heating that we have a safe area around those. So, we like to say a three foot area that’s going to be child free, pet free, and free of any kind of combustibles.”

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should also be in working on and installed on each home level.

When it comes to snow, if a fire hydrant is near the home, work to keep the space around it clear of snow and ice for ease of access.
