Helen M. Sherman, age 100, of Dover, and formerly of Canal Winchester, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2022, in Dover’s Park Village Health Care Center.

Born May 4, 1921, in Canal Winchester, she was the daughter of the late Silas and Orpha Ballmer Alspach. Helen graduated from Canal Winchester High School and went on to attend Grant Hospital School of Nursing in Columbus, becoming a registered nurse. She was employed as a nurse and surgical educator at Grant Hospital (now Grant Medical Center) all of her working life. Helen was a consummate caregiver, and in retirement volunteered at Ohio State University Hospital James Cancer Center, and was instrumental in the establishment and direction of the parish nursing program of her former church, Zion Lutheran, Columbus.

She moved to Dover in 2006, where she became a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Helen was also a member of the Grant Nursing Alumni Association, the Operating Room Nurses Association, the Ohio Health Church Partnership, and the American Red Cross.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and was dedicated to the Lutheran Church. Helen was an accomplished seamstress, sewing over 100 bridal gowns during her lifetime. In addition to the family, nursing, and the church, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, and following sports. Also, Helen sent many, many greeting cards over the years to those who were sick or who were otherwise in need of cheer.

She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Linda (Paul) McFadden of Dover, and Nancy Gillilan of Canal Winchester; her grandchildren, John (Jo) Gillilan of Springfield, Tennessee, Mark (Mandy Kirk) and Scott (Kellsey) Gillilan, both of Canal Winchester, Sarah Endlich of Dover, Rebecca (Michael) McNeil of Dublin, John (Nanette) and James (JoLyn) McFadden, both of Dover; her great-grandchildren, Josie, Johnny, McKenzie, Gracie, Chloe, Joshua, Avery, Rylee, Katelyn, Kinley Madison, Melanie, Lydia and Fox; her sister, Dorothy (James) Leslie of Upper Sandusky; and her nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, David Raymond Sherman, on May 17, 1962; and her siblings, Harlan, Ralph, and Evelyn Alspach.
