A Lake Erie to Ohio River Trail map is available and one of the stops is Historic Zoar Village.
Site Director Tammi Shrum says this is through a partnership with the American250-Ohio Commission.
“They do have an application process, and this is the second trail that we have been accepted to. They’re really neat. They have a fantastic website. We’re on the Creative Trail which Warther’s is also on, and now they have this Lake Erie Trail and it’s just all the waterways in Ohio.”
She notes that Zoar played a significant historical role related to water in Tuscarawas County.
“The canal was huge to Zoar. It really helped the industry there. Actually, what is today the Canal Tavern of Zoar that was a major inn and then the Zoar hotel also housed the canalers that came off of the canal, so Zoar was a big spot. There’s a couple of locks right there, so they’d go into Zoar as they were waiting for the water to either raise or low on the locks.”
The Separatists also shipped goods along the water and helped build three miles of the canal.
