Gwen Rummell Reporting –
As winter sets in, helping stray and escaped animals find comfort and care during the colder months becomes more important.
Winter times poses threats of extreme weather and lack of food to animals.
Tuscarawas County Dog Pound Facility and Adoption Specialist Beth Lewis says the best way to help dogs in the cold is to have them brought into the pound.
“If they find a stray dog during the wintertime and they’re unable to bring it inside, if they could hang onto it, we will always come. If it’s during business hours here at the pound, they just give a call to the office.”
Lewis adds that during non-business hours, individuals can contact their local police department, who will contact the dog warden.
Additionally, anyone feeding strays should avoid overfeeding emaciated animals.
“If you find a really, really skinny stray dog, it’s important to know not to feed that dog much if anything. Just call us right away because if you feed a really emaciated dog too much food, you can actually make them sicker.”
Due to the number of stray cats, those looking to care for them are recommended to build a shelter. Common shelters for felines are made out of foam drink coolers.
If there is available space, humane societies can take in stray cats.
