Olympic medalist Hunter Armstrong speaking at Tuscarawas County YMCA

Dover, Tuscarawas County and all of northeast Ohio celebrated Olympic hero Hunter Armstrong Saturday at the Tuscarawas County YMCA.

The 2019 Dover grad was there with the gold and silver medals he won in swimming relays at the Paris Olympic games.

He thanked the crowd who gathered in the gym at the place where Armstrong started swimming for the Silver Streaks youth program.

“I never saw this being the direction that my life went in and I don’t know why I’m here, but while I am I’m going to make the most it. I was raised in the church. My parents, my brother was a big impact, my grandparents, and I am the person I am today because of where I grew up.”

Armstrong answered some questions about the Olympics, but he seemed to really enjoy interacting with kids who wanted to know things like his favorite basketball player, video game and what he named his new dogs.

Armstrong said he has a new house in the Columbus area and is back at school to finish his degree at Ohio State. Eventually he wants to become an elementary school teacher.

He also plans to train for the next Olympics, which are in Los Angeles in 2028.
