Mary Alice Reporting –

A problem that plaques local lakes each year has been identified at Leesville Lake.

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas recognized by a “rotten egg” odor, and while it doesn’t pose a large risk, extended exposure could lead to symptoms like eye, throat, and nose irritation, as well as fatigue, dizziness, and headaches.

Hydrogen sulfide forms when a concentration of sulfates, during the summer months, are converted through microbial activity occurring in the lakes bottom layers.

The problem is normally confined to the area adjacent to the outlet works.

The Hunting District of the US Army Corps of Engineers will continue to monitor the situation.
