The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) provided an update on illness numbers in Ohio during a Thursday press conference.

Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff started the conference by noting that RSV and COVID-19 numbers are declining.

The ODH has seen a significant decrease in cases compared to the beginning of the year, says Vanderhoff.

“We were seeing 10,000 to 12,000 COVID cases a week earlier this year. We’re now down to about 7,000. Hospitalizations have declined as well. Periodically, reports of new variants have caused concern, but so far, each of these new variants has not been causing an increase in levels of severe disease.”

Vanderhoff adds while RSV numbers surged in December and January, it has fallen for February. Influenza activity has been on-track for the 5-year average statewide.

The public is reminded to stay-up to date with vaccines and practice proper hygiene, such as washing hands and wiping down frequently touched places.
