Mary Alice Reporting –

Contraband was discovered by correction officers regarding two inmates, one was transported to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.

The Monday report occurred an hour before midnight when officers became suspicious of how a prisoner was acting.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell says during questioning, they recovered a small amount of suspected illegal narcotics.

“And then during that investigation, they realized it was probably an individual that had just come in the day before that had smuggled some in and shared something. There was a search and some of that property in that individual cell revealed a small amount.”

Another prisoner was transported by EMS for a suspected overdose and at one point, indicated he had drugs in his sock. Campbell notes that they are now awaiting testing results from BCI.

“They’ll confirm what we have there. That’s kind of important before the prosecutor can charge them because the type of drug determines the level of charge. It’s a felony no matter what to bring it into a jail but there’s still possession related to were proving that it’s an actual illegal narcotic and proving what type is critically important to the case.”

The Sheriff adds that they have a protocol to ensure this type of situation does not happen often like body scans, searches, and canine sweeps, and he praised the actions of the correction officers.
