James Arthur Rectanus, 73, of Dennison, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022, at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover, after a sudden illness. Born February 15, 1949, in Dennison, he was the last surviving son of Audrey E. (Greenwalt) Rectanus and the late Robert Earl Rectanus, having been preceded in death by his brothers, David and Daniel Rectanus.

A 1967 graduate of Claymont High School who also attended Kent State Tuscarawas, Jim proudly served his country in the Marine Corps in Vietnam, attaining the rank of Corporal and earning a number of decorations including the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 star and a Meritorious Mast. He returned home to a 31-year career at Ruger Equipment before working as the custodian at Claymont High School until his retirement in August of 2022. He was a member of the Dennison Eagles and enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially working in his yard. Most of all, he was a devoted and loving family man who dearly loved his wife, children, and grandchildren, delighting in the time that he spent with them, as well as his cherished canine companions, Murphy and Grace.

On March 20, 1971, he married the former Cathy A. Sowers who survives him along with their children, Eric (partner, Mike Frigano) Rectanus, Staci (husband, Brandon) Blackstone, and Robb (wife, Brandy) Rectanus; grandchildren, Brady Saffles, Mckenzie and Braxton Blackstone, and Andrew and Lauren Rectanus; his mother, Audrey Rectanus; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Pam Rectanus, Carol Grimm-Johnson, Karen and Herb Fawcett, and Carl and Heather Sowers; and many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Jim’s wishes, Rev. John Cadwell will officiate a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 30, in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery with a military committal service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity for the benefit of veterans.
