James Carl “Gus” Gustina, age 88, of Cadiz-Piedmont Road, Piedmont died unexpectedly at 5:16 a.m. Sunday, August 6, 2023, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, West Virginia.
He was born January 23, 1935, in Lansing, Belmont County, Ohio to Charles Gustina and Emma Peccin Gustina.
Jim attended Freeport High School, then started driving truck for Les Arnold Trucking in New Athens. After that he started working as a mechanic for Mercury Mining in Lafferty, Cravat Coal in Cadiz, and Harrison County Highway Department, where he retired in 1997. He then enjoyed working more on his farm, which he did his entire life and was still active doing farm work two days ago.
His wife, Edna Catherine “Kate” Morgan Gustina died September of 1997. They were married March 10, 1956.
Surviving are three daughters: Cindy Bear of Piedmont, Betty Ann Moore of Piedmont and Joyce (Mike) Tobin of Freeport; four grandsons: Jamie (Stacey) Bear, Brent (Christy) Bear, Adam (Johnna) Bear, and Matt (Jess) Bear; and nine greatgrandchildren: Landon, Deacan, Natalie, Blayne, Paisley, Jackson, Knox, Bryce, Harper, and Sadie; and a nephew, Richard (Becky) Gustina.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Tom Gustina; a son-in-law, Rick Bear; a sister, Olga West; and a brother, Ugo Gustina.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 9, in Koch Funeral Home in Freeport. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home on Thursday, August 10, 2023, with Nick Puskarich officiating. Burial will follow in Moorefield Cemetery.
