James L. Winkler, 94, of New Philadelphia, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at the Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia following a period of declining health.
He was born in New Philadelphia on March 27, 1928, to the late Earl and Vera (Parson) Winkler.
He was a retired police officer with the New Philadelphia police department and had worked as a horse trainer.
He is survived by his children, Julie (Tom) Kline and Jay Winkler both of New Philadelphia, and Janie (Charles) Dockus of Canton; three grandchildren, Kelly Cappel of Dover, Casey Kline of Philadelphia, PA, and Clarissa Gregg of Colorado; and great grandson Jeremy Cappel.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Jeff Winkler; sister Mary VanDyke; 2 half brothers, Max and Earl Ripley; and half-sister Ruth Rennicker.
In keeping with James’ wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are being planned at this time. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek.
