James M. Hothem, age 73, of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, August 12, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, while in the care of Community Hospice’s Truman House at New Philadelphia. 

Born in Union Hospital at Dover, on June 17, 1950, Jim, and his identical twin brother, are sons of the late Milton A. Hothem and Elizabeth Nylund Hothem.

Jim was a 1970 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and began his career with the family business, Central Auto Electric and Radiator Shop. He later joined Union Millwright Local 1090 and worked in various facilities throughout his career, retiring from Arizona Chemical.

An avid gun enthusiast, Jim loved collecting and shooting firearms and following NASCAR. He was an avid fan of tractors; and enjoyed taking his Cockshutt 30 tractor to various shows. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church at New Philadelphia and the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau. 

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Michelle Stemple whom he married on November 15, 1975; their son, Benjamin “B.J.” (Karen) Hothem of Maryland; grandchildren, Joseph “J.B.” Hothem and Grace C. Hothem; his twin brother, David A.H. (Becky) Nylund of Stone Creek; aunt, Mary Whitaker; a sister-in-law, Barbara Stemple of Uhrichsville and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother and father, Jim was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Dan Stemple.

The family will greet guests on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Jeff Coning, in the Sacred Heart Church on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 10: 30 AM. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Guests are invited to join the family following services for a luncheon which will be shared in the Sacred Heart Parish Center.
