Joann Arlene Deems, 93, of Dennison, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Park Village Health Care Center in Dover, after a period of declining health. Born August 5, 1928, in Mill Township in Tuscarawas County, she was the daughter of the late George Christopher and Julia Elsie (Cush) Rizor.
A lifelong Dennison resident, Joann was a 1946 graduate of Dennison High School and a member of Dennison Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. She served her congregation as a teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School for many years and was a past member of the Elder and Deacon Boards. She faithfully prepared and served the Rotary Club dinners held in the church’s social hall for decades.
On October 17, 1948, Joann married Robert L. Deems with whom she shared 57 years of marriage before his passing on November 28, 2005. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, Joann was employed as the office manager of Romig Insurance Agency in Uhrichsville. She was a member of the Junior Sorosis Club, the Review Club and a card club where she enjoyed the good friendship of her many friends. She was also a former volunteer at Twin City Hospital and the Twin City Christian Service Center Food Pantry.
Joann will be deeply missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Hedy and Dr. Robert Thompson, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Special thanks are extended to Lori and Mike Smith, Grant and Jess Smith, and Paige and Cory Yelverton. In addition to her parents and husband, Joann was preceded in death by her brother, Richard W. Rizor, sister, Marilyn Pearch, and longtime special friend, Wilford Miller.
In accordance with Joann’s wishes, Rev. Carolyn Behrendt will officiate a private service. Joann will be interred beside her beloved husband in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dennison Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 109, Dennison, OH 44621.
