The 51st District seat for the Ohio House of Representatives will be on the ballot in 2024, and a challenger has announced her bid.

The district encompasses all of Tuscarawas County and a southwestern portion of Stark County.

Jodi Salvo, a 17-year resident of Tuscarawas County, decided to file for election because she feels there is a lack of representation in Columbus in Republican conservative values.

“Emphasizing limited government. It’s local control of government that we have the ability to protect our community, to advocate for our community, which is a good fit for our rural areas. Fostering a pro-business environment that empowers our community. Those are principals that I’m very committed to.”

Salvo is the current Director of Substance Use Prevention Services at OhioGuidestone and the coordinator of Empower Tusc, which will be part of her main goal, if elected, of addressing the addiction and mental health crisis.

“I really came to the understanding that we can work so hard in the community, and we have great leaders, but if our laws and policies, if they’re not crafted well, we can work really hard and yet we do not have the laws or the ability to back up and support what needs to happen.”

Salvo has experience at the state capital, and she notes that her time following legislation and speaking before committees has helped her understand what well-crafted legislation looks like, the importance of guardrails, and the importance of having a community voice.

Her name will appear in the March Primary.

The current Representative is Brett Hillyer, whose term ends December 2024. If Hillyer seeks re-election, he must file by December 20th.
