On May 10th, 2022, John Kenneth Mathews, Jr., 66, my husband, passed away with me by his bedside, peacefully & into the arms of God at Ohio State University. John was previously from Newcomerstown until moving from Texas to Zanesville. He fought hard when he was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2020, until this different type of cancer showed up, overtaking his liver.
John was born to Blanche Grace (Davis) & John Kenneth Mathews, Sr. who are both deceased. John graduated from Indian Valley South in 1973 & from Joint Vocational school in Electrical. He worked as a Machinist, brick & block layer, and construction worker, and retired as working at Kroger in their Produce Department as a Manager.
John loved cooking for the family & taking care of his plants and yard. He also enjoyed NASCAR (Jeff Gordon), Ohio State Football, Cleveland Browns & the Cavaliers.
He also loved his 4 legged furry friend who was a yellow lab, called “Mac” more than anyone!! He said that is what kept him going.
John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Debbie (McPherson), his sons Shawn Mathews, Eric Mathews, his sisters, Tammy Mathews, Kelly Mathews, & Shirley Mathews. His brothers, Mark (Nancy) & Roger (Sue) Mathews. Brother-in-law, Charles (Donna) McPherson, & sister-in-law, Shirley McPherson. There are many nieces, nephews, & cousins.
He had 1 sister, Betty (Mathews) Dobson who went to be with God on September 2021. His father & mother-in-law, Walter Norman & Maxie Eileen McPherson. He had a brother-in-law, Jasper McPherson, that went to be with God July 1995, Johnny Kirk (a nephew), & Rese Dunlop (niece).
A celebration of life will be done on June 4, 2022, at The Hartwood Church at 11:00 am. Please join us in this celebration.
