John Walter “Jack” Gibbs, 96 of Uhrichsville and formerly of Tappan Lake, a cherished pillar of the community, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024, in Cleveland Clinic-Union Hospital at Dover, following a brief illness.

Born on November 5, 1927, in Port Washington, Jack was the son of the late Harold and Julia (Walter) Gibbs. He was a graduate of Dover High School and had attended Dennison University at Grandville before being drafted into the United States Army. Jack embodied qualities of honor and duty both in his military service and civilian life. He had the distinct honor of being the last person drafted from Tuscarawas County during WWII—a testament to his commitment to serving his country.

Jack’s legacy is deeply rooted in his role as the Owner and Operator of Gibbs Chevrolet & Buick in Uhrichsville, a business that he took over from his father. His passion for the automotive industry not only shaped his successful career but also served as a to his strong work ethic.

Beyond the confines of work, Jack was a man of diverse interests and pursuits. An avid fisherman, he found solace and joy in his annual fishing trips to places like Lochaven Lodge on the French River in Canada and Hen Island with his best friend Hud Hillyer. Whether he was casting a line in freshwater or saltwater, Jack’s love for fishing was evident to all who knew him.

Jack’s warm and welcoming personality endeared him to all who crossed his path. His kindness knew no bounds, and he welcomed everyone with open arms or a firm handshake. These qualities not only endeared him to his family and friends but also contributed to his success as a businessman.

One of John’s proudest accomplishments was being a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville. Additionally, he was an esteemed member of the Elks Lodges in both Uhrichsville and Cape Coral, Florida, as well as a member of the Masonic Lodge thus further showcasing his commitment to community and fellowship.

He is survived by his wife, Esther J. (Huffman) Gibbs of the residence; his son, John “JJ” (Jill) Gibbs of Uhrichsville; a step-daughter, Beth (Brad) Durnell of Columbus; a step-son, Alan (Lisa) Welch of New Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Jim (Holly) Gibbs of Dover, Carrie (Kyle) Hanks of Leavenworth, Kansas and John Kenedy of Orillia, Ontario, Canada; four great grandchildren, Abbigale and Zakery Gibbs and Katley and Casey Hanks; a great-granddaughter, Lorelai Monarez; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Skip and Carolee Ervin and a sister-in-law, Diane Plotts.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Gibbs and his daughter, Challis Gibbs.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, beginning at 11 AM in the Uhrich-Hostettler-English Funeral Home at Uhrichsville, with Rev. William Surber officiating. Burial will be in Clay Union Cemetery at Gnadenhutten. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 5 to 7 PM in the funeral home.

It was Jack’s wish that memorial contributions be directed to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 426, Uhrichsville, Ohio 44683.
